About Trail Map GPS 🥾
Professional trail navigation technology for hikers and mountain bikers who demand accuracy and reliability
Our Mission 🎯
Trail Map GPS exists to democratize professional-grade GPS navigation for every hiker and mountain biker. For decades, serious backcountry users relied on expensive dedicated GPS devices that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Those devices required proprietary map subscriptions, offered limited functionality, and created a barrier between casual enthusiasts and serious outdoor adventurers.
We believe your smartphone already has everything you need: GPS hardware, powerful processors, large screens, and instant access to critical information like weather and maps. Yet most hiking apps treated GPS navigation as an afterthought—a secondary feature instead of a core strength. Trail Map GPS changes that. We built a GPS navigation app that's as powerful as dedicated devices, but integrated with modern trail data, real-time weather, and emergency features that traditional GPS devices never offered.
Our mission is to put professional navigation capabilities in the pocket of every hiker. No expensive device purchases. No proprietary map subscriptions. Just one straightforward app on the phone you already carry. Trail Map GPS makes safe, confident backcountry navigation accessible to everyone.
Why We Built Trail Map GPS 💡
The founder of Trail Map GPS got lost on a backcountry hike in 2018. Not catastrophically—they had their phone and a paper map—but lost enough to understand how quickly things can go wrong. They were hiking alone, visibility was limited, and navigation was unclear. The experience was humbling: despite being an experienced hiker, they realized how dependent they were on reliable navigation tools.
Looking at options, dedicated GPS devices were expensive ($400-800+) and required understanding of map formats and menus. Phone apps mostly showed you a dot on a map without providing confidence that you were on the correct trail. Weather apps were disconnected from location. SOS features were buried in phone menus. The experience was fragmented—you needed multiple apps to get the functionality one comprehensive device should provide.
Trail Map GPS was born from that frustration. What if you combined the power of your smartphone with professional GPS navigation features, integrated weather data, offline maps, and emergency tools? What if one app did navigation, weather, waypoint management, emergency communication, and track recording without requiring six different apps and expensive devices?
The first version focused on the core: reliable GPS positioning, detailed maps, and confidence in knowing where you were. Years of development added live weather radar, wind overlays, elevation profiles, emergency SOS, position sharing, and comprehensive trail data. But the core mission remained: professional navigation for every hiker, without the expensive device or subscription requirements.
What Makes Trail Map GPS Different 🌟
🗺️ Offline Maps as Core Feature
Offline maps aren't an afterthought in Trail Map GPS—they're the foundation. We built the app specifically to work offline because we understand backcountry reality: cell service is nonexistent in mountains. Rather than requiring constant connectivity, we designed offline functionality from day one. Download maps before your trip, and the app works perfectly without service. This is a core value, not a premium feature.
🌦️ Real-Time Weather Integration
Unlike traditional GPS devices that required separate weather apps, Trail Map GPS integrates live weather data directly into your navigation. See storms approaching on a radar overlay. Know wind speed and direction for exposed hiking. Get forecasts specific to your elevation. Weather is critical to trail safety, so we integrated it completely rather than forcing you to switch apps.
🆘 Built-In Emergency Features
Trail Map GPS includes SOS emergency activation, position sharing, and emergency contact management—features that dedicated GPS devices often lack completely. In remote areas where standard phone services might fail, our emergency features work offline. This isn't a gimmick; it's a core safety feature we invested in heavily because emergencies happen in backcountry.
💰 No Proprietary Map Subscriptions
Traditional GPS devices lock you into expensive ongoing map subscriptions. Trail Map GPS uses open-source trail data combined with freely available map tiles. You download maps once; they're yours forever. Updates are free. No recurring subscription fees for map data. We believe map information should be freely accessible to everyone, not monetized continuously.
📱 Uses Device You Already Own
You already carry a smartphone with a powerful GPS receiver, large screen, and internet connectivity. Rather than requiring a separate $600+ device, Trail Map GPS runs on the phone in your pocket. Better screen than dedicated GPS devices. More powerful processor. Instant access to your other apps and communication. Why carry multiple devices when one can do everything?
🤝 Community-Driven Data
Trail data comes from OpenStreetMap and hikers like you. The database improves when users contribute trail information. Corrections, new trails, trail condition updates—these come from the community rather than a proprietary database controlled by one company. Trail Map GPS participates in this ecosystem rather than creating walled gardens.
🌐 Works on Any Device
Smartphone, tablet, laptop—Trail Map GPS works on any device with a modern browser or the mobile app. Broke your phone? Use your tablet. Don't have a smartphone? Use the web version on any computer. Rather than locking you into a specific device or ecosystem, we built flexibility into every layer of the platform.
⚡ No Ads, No Tracking
Trail Map GPS makes money from subscriptions, not from selling your location data or showing ads. We don't track where you hike. We don't sell your data to third parties. We don't show ads while you're trying to navigate. When you pay for Premium features, that subscription funds development—not advertising infrastructure. Your privacy is protected.
Our Commitment to Hikers & Bikers 🤝
We are hikers and bikers ourselves. We understand the challenges of backcountry navigation, the terror of realizing you're lost, the relief of accurate maps, and the peace of mind from reliable emergency tools. This isn't a company selling a product to strangers—it's hikers building tools for the hiking community.
We commit to: Never abandoning offline functionality. Navigation must work without connectivity. If that changes, we'll publicly explain why and provide alternatives. Users should always be able to navigate without relying on servers.
We commit to: Keeping maps free and continuously updated. Trail data should be freely accessible. We'll never implement expensive map subscriptions or lock map updates behind paywalls. Premium features might be limited, but you can always navigate with accurate maps.
We commit to: Maintaining backward compatibility. Old phones shouldn't be abandoned. We'll support older OS versions for as long as technically feasible. You don't need to buy new devices to use Trail Map GPS.
We commit to: Privacy protection. Your location data is never sold, never shared, never tracked. Emergency features are never monetized. We won't exploit safety features to collect data. Your hiking patterns remain private.
We commit to: Transparent pricing. No hidden fees, no surprise charges, no complex tier systems. Our pricing is simple and clearly explained. If you subscribe, you know exactly what you're paying for and what features you get.
We commit to: Honest marketing. We describe features accurately, not with exaggeration or false claims. If something doesn't work perfectly, we'll say so rather than pretending it does. Trail navigation is serious business; honesty is essential.
We commit to: Continuous improvement. We listen to user feedback and implement features that matter. Development is driven by what users need on trails, not by what generates ad revenue. The app improves because hikers make it better through feedback and contributions.
Trail Map GPS exists because we love hiking and believe professional navigation should be accessible. We're committed to that mission for as long as we build this app.
